My sense is there’s a worm turning. Front page paywalled article in
The wsj today, about changing attitudes in corporate leadership, whereby distinctions are being drawn between speech and workplace disruption. Google just fired 28 pro-pal stagers of a sit in. Similar to Columbia this week, when campus public spaces were cleared and arrests ensued. Complaints, largely from Jewish students, include being chased by groups of kids, being accosted in public spaces to declare their political positions, things like that.
These complaints appear to me to be met with instant doubt, mostly by folks on the left. Assumptions seem to be made that protestors are being wrongly accused when they’re just protesting policy. But if kids are free to express themselves, are they not also free to keep their opinions to themselves? Is it ok to accost someone for just appearing obviously Jewish?
Kids and others complaining of harassment or worse should be taken seriously. I’m totally down with pro-Palestinian not being confused with bigotry or aggression. I’m also down with taking accusations of aggression seriously.
And on the history part of this, I have problems with Palestinian supporters who express solidarity with Hamas. They should be protesting Hamas as loudly as Netanyahu, should not be declaring all Jews collectively guilty of the policies they oppose, and should be required to respect others in the same way they want to be respected. That last part is what’s missing in large part imo.
